Sustainable Tree Planting
We’ve partnered with GreenStand to enable local Tanzanians to re-forest their environment and provide them with regular income.
Growers are paid per tree they keep alive and this income can go towards placing their children in school which is currently a struggle for many families, especially single mothers.
The amazing charity GreenStand facilitates the planting of trees in the most sustainable way. Trees are vital to us all. On a local level, they increase rainfall which helps bring water to the local area and also improves water retention, increasing crop productivity. They provide safe refuge and food for many animals and insects and help to maintain biodiversity. On a wider scale, trees help cool the earth and clean the air around us.
Some of the areas we plant in are around vital wildlife corridors that many bird and animal species (such as elephants, giraffes, antelope, and big cats) use to move between protected parks. The trees are so important to their survival but are being heavily depleted because of the need for firewood, housing, and increasing droughts.
How does it work?
Growers plant a tree, take a photo and receive money in return for their efforts. Every subsequent time period that the tree is alive, they receive a payment, meaning that the growers are receiving regular income. With enough trees, the income can be used to support the family, provide school supplies or even send a child to school.
Why is it good for you?
Carbon Sinking
Project Plant gives you the ability to offset the carbon footprint from your travels with Green Light Ventures. We strive to ensure that everyone who embarks on our adventures plants at least 50 trees! This helps you to offset your carbon footprint for the whole trip, from your journey to the airport to your journey back home!
Give back to the communities you gain from
Your once-in-a-lifetime experience wouldn’t be the same without the amazing communities that host you in the place they call home. Tree planting is a great way to say thank you. You know that the trees you contribute will directly benefit the communities you are visiting, improving their environment and bringing them another sustainable income.
You know that the trees will grow!
Rather than a ‘scatter and see’ approach to tree planting, using the pay-the-planter model ensures that the trees reach their full potential! We use established saplings to plant with which have a far greater chance to survive and grow to maturity than a seed. Our growers are there for a minimum of 2 years to tend to their trees. Whether they're grown for fruits or shade, you know that the trees that are planted will grow to their full carbon-locking and life-giving potential!
Having the community invested in tree planting is the best recipe for success. this is why why we often plant trees with key community members and groups in important wildlife areas or plant them in community spaces such as schools where the students are involved in not only the growing but the education around the project.
