Is your inner eco-warrior being left out from your workplace?
/One of the things that the Climate Crisis is showing us is that, as businesses, we all have a responsibility to look after our planet, people and everything in between.
As consumers, we’re rapidly becoming more aware of this: switching away from single use plastics; supporting human rights movements; challenging slavery and changing our buying powers as a result. But sometimes this is lost once we’ve stepped through the office door. Don’t get me wrong, there are many people (hats off to you!) who are working to make their businesses more aware and make changes at all levels of business.
But for many of us, we can fall short when we reach the office. Personally, I’m trying harder to source my food, clothing and belongings more responsibly. But I’ll be honest, when I reach the office, ROI and profit and loss are what drive my decision making.
I end up choosing making money over the environment and people.
What can we do to change this culture?
It can start with the small things.
Could you change where you source paper from for printing; make sure things are recycled or encourage colleagues to bring their own lunches rather than going and buying packaged sandwiches?
Could you become a ‘champion’ in your business? Could you encourage your procurement procedures to look to be more ethical in their choices?
Could you then move onto larger things? When making business decisions based purely on profit, are there ways you can challenge them? Can you encourage ethics to become part of the culture, including the way targets and goals are set?
Could your organisation improve their impact, by partnering with charities (both environmental and people focussed) to learn more about how you can change things in your organisation?
